Development and Implementation of Faculty Led Teaching Training and Course Review Within the Academic Unit

Discuss how an academic unit (Exercise Physiology) created an internal committee focused on teaching using best practices to enhance course development and student learning. During this session we will explore how the committee developed an experiential and activity-based peer-teaching workshop, derived from WVU TLC and other best practices resources, specific to the needs and goals of the academic unit.

As a collegiate rower, 2014 Top 25 USA triathlete and four-time competitor of the Ironman world event, Lori truly understands the specific demands and intricacies of performance training.

Leary is an exercise scientist with more than a decade of experience specializing in the physiological and biomechanical factors limiting human performance. He was recently published with Miriam Leary and Lori Sherlock in an educational research paper entitled “Evaluating 5% Healthier: An e-Service-Learning Teleexercise Program for Undergraduate and Graduate Students in Exercise Physiology.” The program provided a remote experiential learning opportunity for students and a supervised exercise program for participants during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Miriam Pearman Leary photo

Miriam Leary

Dr. Miriam Leary holds a BS in exercise biology from the University of California Davis, an MS in exercise physiology from WVU, and a PhD in exercise science from the University of Texas at Austin where her research focused on the vascular effects of nutrition interventions. Miriam is also a Registered Clinical Exercise Physiologist with the American College of Sports Medicine. She just finished her postdoctoral fellowship in human nutrition at WVU and is excited to join us as an Assistant Professor in Exercise Physiology with her efforts focused on retention and developing offsite internship opportunities for field placement.
